In 1939, when le Brocquy was living in the south of France, he recieved a letter from Robert Dobbyn, the manager of his grandfather's oil business in Dublin. It contained a photograph of schoolgirls returning from the Church of Adam and Eve along the quays (Evening Herald). The artist made a few watercolours and drawings on the theme in the mid-forties, and some further studies in the 1960s, but it was not until 1984 that this image of a procession with lilies returned to haunt him, giving rise to an ongoing series of oils, watercolours and lithoographs
