Image of James Joyce, 1978
Oil on canvas, 70 x 70 cm (detail) (no.406)

In 1976 Louis le Brocquy was involved in an accident, and as a result, broke the scaphoid bone in his right hand. With his good arm in plaster he continued to paint using his 'ignorant left hand'. He said of the work produced at this time that it 'would appear that no dexterity whatever was involved in forming these images, which tended to emerge automatically'.
