This unusual study on canvas gives an idea of le Brocquy's working method. The artist begins with a cursory charcoal drawing, sketched directly onto the primed canvas, using the flat side of a charcoal stick. Only then is the paint applied to form the definitive composition. In this particular instance, the charcoal study has been taken to its own conclusion, without the use of paint.
